Maine Coon Adoption Process: Our Step-by-Step Process

Finding the right Maine Coon takes more than choosing a photo. Our adoption process gives us time to get to know your family, watch each kitten develop, and make the reservation only when you feel ready.
We raise a limited number of carefully planned litters in our home in Westfield, Indiana.

Every step — from application to go-home day — is designed to be clear, personal, and transparent.

Step 1

Application & Preparation

The journey begins with a simple application.
We want to get to know you before accepting a deposit. Tell us about your home, lifestyle, other pets, children, and what you hope to find in your future Maine Coon.

We welcome your questions and specific wishes. This is a personal process, and understanding your expectations helps us guide you toward the right kitten.
Once approved, you have two paths.
1. Available Kittens — see kittens currently looking for their families.

2. Priority Waiting List — join if you are waiting for a future litter, particular traits, or the right personality match.
Joining our waitlist is completely free. Approved families receive priority access to upcoming litters before kittens are publicly available. No deposit is required to join.
We stay in touch. You can follow our kittens through photos, videos, social media updates, and litter announcements.

We also send you practical care information. So you can begin preparing for your new kitten well before go-home day.
While you wait:
Wait time depends on what you’re looking for. Gender, color, and other preferences all affect how quickly the right kitten may become available.

If your preferences are very specific, the wait may be 6–12 months. Approved families on our waitlist are offered suitable kittens first, and the more flexible you are, the sooner we may be able to find the right fit.
Step 2

Watch & Meet

From birth, I watch each kitten grow and get to know their personality.
As the litter develops, differences in temperament become easier to see. By around 5 weeks and older, each kitten’s personality is usually much clearer.

But sometimes the connection forms much earlier. Some families know almost immediately which kitten they are drawn to.
When you are ready to seriously consider a specific kitten, we meet by live video
Sometimes it happens as early as 2 weeks old. I introduce you to the kitten, answer your questions, and show you what I can already observe about their personality and development.
We do not currently allow in-home visits while our kittens are growing. They receive vaccinations in stages and are still vulnerable to viruses and bacteria that can be brought inside on clothing or shoes.

Our cats and kittens also live with us in our family home. Instead, I’m always happy to meet by live video. You can see the kittens, their environment, and how they naturally play and interact at home.
Step 3

Review the Purchase Contract

All kittens are sold with a Purchase Contract.

I’m happy to email the contract for review before you reserve a kitten. You will have time to read the terms and ask questions before making your decision.

The contract must be signed before your kitten leaves our care.

The Contract also outlines the remaining balance and final payment terms.

No. We do not make individual changes to our Purchase Contract. It was prepared by attorneys in Indiana and is designed to protect you, us, and the kitten.

The terms reflect many years of experience, and we keep the same contract for every family.
Please reserve only when you are fully ready and everyone in your household is on board.
Step 4

Reserve Your Kitten

After the live video call and contract review, a $300 deposit reserves your kitten.
Please Note
1. A kitten is considered officially Reserved only after the $300 deposit has been received.

2. Until a deposit is received, I may be speaking with more than one approved family about the same kitten. A conversation about a kitten does not create an obligation for you or for me.

3. The deposit is non-refundable. If your plans change, it may be transferred to the next litter.

Step 5

After Reservation

Once your kitten is officially reserved, you stay connected while they continue growing in our home.
I will send occasional photos and/or videos so you can follow their development.Your kitten continues growing in our home while receiving veterinary care and daily handling.

Most kittens are ready to go home at approximately 12–14 weeks of age, after being spayed or neutered.

Some kittens may stay with us longer if they need additional care or if a spay/neuter appointment is delayed. We always make the go-home decision based on the individual kitten.

A lot goes into preparing your kitten for home — from comprehensive veterinary care and health coverage to registration documents, insurance, food, and a full go-home package.

Prepare for Your Kitten’s Arrival
As your kitten gets closer to go-home age, we’ll confirm the expected timing so you can begin preparing for their arrival.
Schedule Your First Veterinary Visit
Veterinary clinics can book appointments well in advance, so once your kitten’s go-home timing is clear, I recommend scheduling the first visit ahead of time.

This first examination gives you and your veterinarian time to review the kitten’s medical records and establish ongoing care from the start.
Under our Purchase Contract,
your kitten must be examined by a licensed veterinarian
within 72 business hours of going home with you.
Step 6

Socialization & Welcome Home

Daily family life is part of every kitten’s preparation.
Our kittens grow up cage-free in the heart of our home, around children, our two toy poodles, other cats, normal household sounds, play, and regular handling.

By go-home time, your kitten will be:

  • Well socialized and comfortable with everyday household activities, people, and dogs.
  • Familiar with brushing, grooming, and nail trimming.
  • Fully litter box trained.

I continue watching each kitten develop throughout this period. By the time they leave us, I know much more about how they respond to people, activity, affection, and everyday family life.
On Pickup Day
  • Pay the remaining balance in full on pickup day.
  • Activate your complimentary 30-day Trupanion pet medical insurance on pickup day. It is included at no cost to you and provides coverage for your kitten’s first month at home.
Pickup & Delivery
1. Westfield, Indiana
You’re welcome to pick up your kitten directly from us in Westfield. If you’re flying into Indiana, we can also meet you at the airport and help make the handoff before your return flight.

2. Complimentary Ground Meet-Up
If you live in Indiana or a neighboring state, I can drive up to 1.5–2 hours from Westfield to meet you at a convenient location. Meet-ups are typically scheduled during school hours, and this service is completely free.

3. In-Cabin Flight Delivery
For families farther away, either my husband or I can personally accompany your kitten by air. Your kitten travels in the airplane cabin — never in cargo.

Flight delivery fee: $500 plus the cost of a round-trip airline ticket.

What I want most is for your kitten to arrive home feeling confident and familiar with everyday life — not overwhelmed by it.

Going home is not where our relationship ends.

Your Maine Coon may leave my home, but I still care about how they’re doing. You can message me with questions about health, feeding, grooming, behavior, or simply send a photo and let me know how life together is going.

Whether it’s next week or years from now, you’re always welcome to reach out. And if I don’t know the answer myself, I’ll help point you toward someone who does.

I never want a family to feel alone after bringing one of my kittens home.
